JOB VACANCY FOR AN EXPERIENCED LAMPSHADE MAKER

Elstead Lighting has been a lighting manufacturer and distributor for over 50 years and as part of the collection makes many shades for our large portable and fixtures catalogue. The shade department produces high quality handmade and often bespoke lampshades, supplying to busy and demanding interior designers, high-end retail and large commercial customers.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Shade production
  • Produce hard back laminated lampshades (individual bespoke orders to large batch stock or commercial orders) on time as per schedule
  • Cut the laminate and material of the desired template, minimising wastage
  • Tape and glue shades together with the highest quality of finish (no loose threads visible and well bonded seams)
  • Ideally will have experience of making soft pleated shades to reintroduce this ability in-house when required or have accomplished sewing machine and craft skills to learn how to make soft pleated shades
  • Ideally will have experience in making unusual size and shapes of shades with the ability to make new laminate templates for these bespoke orders
  • Provide fabric samples to customers
  • Test COM (customers own material) for suitability and calculate quantity of COM required for shade(s) required
  • Quality check all finished products before wrapping to ensure they meet quality standards
  • Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of the department
Shade product development
  • Problem solve, applying existing knowledge to new situations for individual shades
  • Ability to learn quickly and continuously improve technique and productivity to service increasing demand
  • Craft skills to help with the development of new types of shades
Communication
  • Basic computer knowledge to use Epicor software and Microsoft Outlook emails
  • Communicate in a timely, planned way to other departments for metalwork, boxes and UK assembled products
  • Communicate complete jobs to sales office and Marketing Director to trigger dispatch
Multi-skills and Flexibility
  • Flexibility to work in other manufacturing or testing roles if demand for shades is low at any time

OTHER INFORMATION

Full-time permanent position reporting to the Lampshade Production Supervisor or Marketing Director.

Monday to Friday 8.00am – 4.30pm (40 Hours – Paid).

Benefits: 

  • Salary: £19,760 to £24K per annum depending on experience
  • 28 days holiday inclusive of Bank Holidays (pro-rata basis – calculated from start date).
  • Statutory pension scheme enrolment upon successful completion of probationary period.

SENIOR PRODUCTION ASSISTANT (MACHINE SHOP)

Elstead Lighting is a family-owned business that has operated in Hampshire for over 50 years as a manufacturer and distributor of decorative lighting. The business has grown extensively over the last 10 years and now has become an internationally renowned company supplying beautiful products to over 50 different countries.

BRIEF

As part of the production team you will be required to perform a number of key activities to maintain smooth and efficient production and general operations. Reporting directly to the Production Supervisor, this position provides essential support in the manufacture of component parts and fittings.

It is paramount that you have an understanding and awareness of the requirement to produce accurate and quality finished parts and fittings in a productive manner at all times.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

You should have a good mechanical and technical aptitude, receive and undertake instruction well alongside a willingness to learn and further develop your existing skills. Previous experience within a production machine shop is essential.

A positive can-do attitude coupled with good interpersonal and communication skills and an excellent attendance record is required to be successful in this role.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Proven experience as a Senior member of a production team
  • Willingness to cross train across other production departments as required
  • Knowledge of the welding process would be an advantage
  • Basic computer literacy (training will be provided)
  • Ability to use own initiative
  • A team player
  • Capability to organise and prioritise own workload
  • Physical strength and stamina (role is primarily standing with exception of breaks and lunch period)
  • Ability to lift medium to heavy objects

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support and assist the production supervisor in operating numerically controlled machines, lathes, drills, or other machines and tools to manufacture component parts and fittings
  • Undertake on the job training and coaching from the production supervisor in all areas and all processes and tools within the machine shop
  • As required assist within the powder coating paint plant process
  • Assist in accurate record keeping using the computerised system to record completed jobs
  • Ensure proper care is taken in the use and maintenance of all equipment, machinery and supplies
  • Understand and abide by the production departments workplace safety and environmental practices in addition to the overall Company health and safety policies and procedures
  • Ability to follow work instructions to complete products according to specifications and inspect completed work for quality control
  • Maintain procedures and document management systems to maintain ISO accreditation and its continuing audit along with any other QMS as instructed by the Company.
  • Report defective materials, machines or questionable conditions to the production supervisors immediately
  • Undertake any other reasonable tasks as directed by the production supervisors and/or management

Core skills:

  • Minimum 3 A ‘Levels, plus Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Digital Design or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a digital graphic designer with a proven portfolio of work in industry.
  • Ability to learn quickly when facing new tasks/challenges.
  • Strong administration/database skills essential.
  • Sound technical knowledge of:
    Graphic design software – Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop CC.
    Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Advanced experience using a CMS, with basic knowledge of HTML and CSS preferable.
  • Some experience of UI / UX design desirable.
  • Experience creating email campaigns with Mailchimp or similar client.
  • Good time management i.e. concentrating effort on priorities and work well under pressurised deadlines.
  • A keen eye for detail.
  • Show flexibility, initiative and creativity in project work.
  • A team player who is action orientated to get the job done.
  • Relates well to all kinds of people inside and outside of Elstead, building rapport and effective relationships.

Key tasks:

  • Project manage the design presentation and user experience of our websites within the Elstead Group, liaising with external agencies when required. This includes the creation of the new Quintiesse website and refreshing our other two main sites: Elstead Lighting and Distinctive Lighting. Occasional input into a small number of partner sites may also be required.
  • Support and create regular new content for websites within Elstead Group, including news posts and promotions.
  • Manage the creation of digital assets from artwork and image files, overseeing the workload of a marketing assistant, and ensuring these assets are available to customers through correct channels.
  • Work with the marketing team to generate digital advertising campaigns, creating content that will span across websites, social media, and email communications.
  • Contribute to the production of artwork for company literature including: catalogues, showroom/trade advertisements, flyers, POS, newsletters and packaging.
  • Improve product images within Photoshop (ensuring colours and details are true to actual product).
  • Create faux lifestyle photography for products using stock imagery, as well as working with third party CGI companies.
  • Contribute to new photography projects required for catalogues and websites giving direction to Chinese colleagues or third-party photographers for angles and close-ups required.
  • Ensure branding guidelines are followed within our digital assets and campaigns to incorporate our USA partners and subsidiary companies. Control the use of logos and fonts in all visual media.
  • Support the Marketing Director with new marketing initiatives including general administration: general typing, spread sheets, presentations and office duties as required for sales and marketing projects.
